A Silent Art

A film is about the Indian pantomime - the art of gestures, movement and expression, where no spoken words are used. In India, the art of mime comes from Bharat's Natya Shastra, but its evolution as an art form for full-length presentation is of recent origin. This film presents an ardent exponent of mime, Jagesh Datta and the Jagesh Mime Academy established by him in Calcutta. This institute is affiliated both to the Central Sangeet Natak Academy and Rabindra Bharati University.

NM0014 : A Mission of Friendship

New York, July 28, 1982: The United Nations building on Manhattan Island. After arriving in New York on an 8-day state visit to the United States, the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi meets the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar. Talkie includes that of the Secretary General and of Mrs. Gandhi's. Back to New York on August 1: Mrs. Gandhi visits the Gurudwara in New York. Mrs. Gandhi, Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi took part in the prayers. On August 2, Mrs. Gandhi received the U Thant Award for Cultural Understanding between East and West.

A Growing House

A film focussing on the activities of the National Building Organisation (NBO) which attempts to provide houses for poor families in small towns and villages. NBO is engaged in developing low cost housing.

Indian Talkie

While drawing the history of the Indian talkie which began in1931 with the first sound film Alam Ara, this film includes interviews of the veterans of the Indian film industry, such asJairaj, LV Prasad, JBH Wadia, Sohrab Modi, Satyajit Ray,Raj Kapoor, BR Chopra, Mrinal Sen, Tarachand Barjatia and BasuBhattacharya. LV Prasad : "I joined Imperial Film Compnay in theyear 1930. I acted in Alam Ara. Well, after finishing the picture, when I went to see it, I think it was in Majestic cinema, I saw people thrilled. Previously they used to see only silent pictures.

A Temple of Learning

An informative film on the Bombay University Library and its marvellous collection of books, manuscripts, theses, dissertations, reference material, et al. 100 years old, this library was opened in 1880. In 1973, the University expanded the library facilities at its new campus in Kalina (Bombay) where Jawaharlal Nehru Library in a separate building has also been set up.

Badshan Khan

A biographical film is on Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan (Badshah Khan). He was also lovingly known as the Frontier Gandhi. This film highlights Badshah Khan's visit to India, when he came to receive the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Award for International Understanding. This Award was handed over to Badshah Khan by India's President, Mr. V. V. Giri in 1967. Mahatma Gandhi respected Badshah Khan for his firm belief in the non-violent movement.

This Land Is Mine

Asia's largest farmers' co-operative - the Indian Farmers' Fertilizer Co-operative Ltd. (IFFCO) was formed in 1967. IFFCO's basic aim is to usher in a substantial change in India's rural life. This film presents a village in South India, which was adopted by the IFFCO a couple of years ago.

Siddheshwari

A film about the great thumri singer Siddheshwari Devi, who was born on August 8, 1902, breaking all conventional modes of biographical or documentary film making, this film becomes a work of transgression. It transgresses both home and dream. Like a Sufi wanderer, it celebrates the life of exile. No space holds, no truth encompasses, no identity is the final.
